You find a sense of gratification when everything seems to be working good. I can't say everything went perfectly this year, but it was pretty great. Gary and I visited all of our children in all parts of the nation. Saw all the grandkids. All the kids and grandkids are doing pretty well in their life. You know you didn't really do anything to get them there, other than be their parents, and sometimes that's pretty hard.
We love all 12 children and 16 grandchildren, and one on the way. I am so thankful for them and of course my husband.

Its a beautiful day to clean house.
I have been thinking about names or words of songs, names of books, cliches, and its interesting where they pick them up from. So many of them come from old slangs or comments. The other day I was watching a movie and the couple was sitting out on the balcony and they looked up into the sky and said "its a beautiful day". What do you consider as a beautiful day.
So many times in our lives we make that same comment and usually it is said while we are sitting on a patio, the air is just perfect, crisp and clean, the temperature is just right, not to hot, not to cold and the sky is usually a cloudless day, maybe even a gorgeous sunset. When you get older that statement starts to become even more profound in our lives. A beautiful day could be that we are at peace with ourselves, with our own spirituality, with our family, with our conflicts.
I agree that I have said that so many times sitting on my patio enjoying the environment and lately I have felt a peace with myself, may it be of the life I have led, a sense of peace within my own relationships, may it be with my husband or my children or just with the day to day challenges.
I sometimes wonder if that will change as my grandchildren get older, a little more independent, a little more wilder, a little more struggling and I see what I went through in their parents' faces. Will I relive that or will I find a peace that I know my children will get through it just like I did.
For many years as I saw my children grow up, it was hard to see them go through what I went through. I know I will have challenges and an opportunity for regrets in the future, but I find myself realizing that the life I have led in the past, full of regrets, have come around with a statement, "but you learned" from those regrets and that was the most important lesson.
Another cliche I love is "lets clean house." Of course you can take that literally, which I really try not to get to carried away with cleaning my house, or you can take it figuratively. I had regretted so many relationships that I gave up in my past. Even a good friend said that she had to come clean with the friendships that she stepped away from with her friends. I had to laugh, I thought there is a definite reason why anyone steps away from a relatively good relationship. I usually don't just jump off of the relationship train without really thinking it out.
Shortly after this visit with my friend, I heard a radio disc jockey say, sometimes you have to "clean house" with friend relationships to keep your own self doubt, your own mental capacity in a "good state of mind." Of course those relationships can always come back, but after listening to my friend's reunions with conflicts, I decided more than likely not.
Just don't get me started on "let's have a come to Jesus meeting." I could tell you stories...
The best thing about cliches, they were born many generations before mine and if you only listen to what they have to say you can learn a lot.

A Happy State of Mind
In spite of my everyday ailments and pain, there is a time in everyone's life that you have a sense of accomplishment and lately it has been mine. I know I am not getting younger, I may not be able to ski as hard as I did a few years ago, I know I have done what I can for my children, I know that my husband is my husband and hopefully without any great discomfort on one of our parts we will stay together. I have accepted what ever I can do, as little as that might be, that is the best for right now and that is okay.
My son just went into the Army, and not that I wasn't already proud of him, but the fact that he made the effort to go into the service at the age of 33 I felt was a great accomplishment on his part. It is hard to go through basic training. They treat you tough so you will be tough and it showed in his mannerisms and his face when we showed up that it was tough.
I am as proud of my two daughters, have they got to the easy part of their life, no, but they have learned a tremendous amount in the last several years. Life isn't going to be easy sometimes, but you need to keep on growing to get to the good stuff. They make me exceptionally proud.
I love my husband and everything that he has given to me, especially in the last couple of years while I have been sick. He has supported me, watched out for me, and taken care of me when I needed it.
My grandkids at this point, can they do anything wrong, according to their parents, yes, but with grandma, no. I love them so much.
Life is good and in spite of my shortcomings I feel like I am in a very comfortable state of mind. Hopefully the future will present more of hopefulness of health and happiness.

A Mother Suffering In Silence
Mother's Day is just days away and every year so many mothers dread the day. You ask why, children come with gifts, media outwardly celebrate, husbands may or may not bring flowers, so you ask why? Celebrating mothers do not give us a relief of the great accomplishments we have, it gives us a reminder of those things that we haven't done, the insecurities of what we should have done, and what the future may hold for what will need to be done.
My sweet daughter that is basically just starting out in life has realized that maybe even though I look pretty happy every day I have had my share of anxiety, depression, and uncertainties in life. There is happiness in all of us if we look deep enough especially when we are low. When it comes to Mother's Day it reminds us of those moments that may have not made ourselves or our family happy.
My son is about to go into the Army on Mother's Day, how apropos, seriously. I am so happy that he has found something that he wants to make a career out of. There is never a question of the happiness a mother feels when a child realizes his potential, but in the same way you fear the things he should be afraid for. Knowing he is going into an area that won't be hostile still does not give me peace of mind, what about boot camp, what about the men around him, what about all the unknowns. That is what a Mom truly thinks about, not the temporary or long term happiness he might find.
My daughter is going through the struggles of marriage, her future and just basic life. I see so much potential, and things that she can't or won't see. What is that Moms say, it was bad enough that I went through life and the trials it had to offer, little alone the life my children are going through. You cry doubly hard when your child is crying, you fear when your child is uncertain, you pray harder when your child is feeling pain.
My other daughter in spite of having the best four children in the world, that can't be a grandmother talking, still has financial, medical, spiritual and physical problems. I use to say when my kids are on their own, then they can worry about their own problems, their children problems and I can take a rest. You don't, again you worry twice or three times as hard.
As a mother, grandmother, and wife, you hold so much back because to convey these fears to your children, just exasperates their fears, a mother wouldn't do that. So you hold so much in silence and hope that life treats them better than it did to you. That even though you may be the happiest you have ever been, it still allows the past to creep in of your own memories of growing.
A good friend told me the other day, "a mother's happiness is as happy as your saddest child." It is so true.
This does sound like the saddest Mother's Day tribute, but in reality sometimes things needs to be said so those around you can relate and feel that they aren't the only ones that feel this way.
I do hope that Mother's Day will be good this year. I do hope those mothers including my own daughters will be happier than I am anticipating and if not we can commiserate together. Cheers to womanhood and mothers.

Tauting Your Love
I have never been one for tauting my love for my husband, especially on our anniversary, it seems so cheesy when I read of someone doing that, isn't that sort of private, I don't know, I'm old fashioned. I remember my mom and dad's anniversary, which I think it is sort of odd too. Why would I remember something that they celebrate, maybe because I had parents that stayed married unlike I. Well since no one really reads this blog, I guess it is sort of personal, even the hubby won't read this blog. I will be dead and buried and someone will find this and read it and say, "that is what grandma... really felt about all these issues." Dah maybe if you had been hearing me all of these years you wouldn't be surprised.
Well just so you know it is my wedding anniversary, I don't even know which one it is, maybe 15th or 16th, to the third husband. I guess the other two don't count since I did divorce them, shouldn't you celebrate the divorced dates, that should be a happy moment in my life, but I don't. Happy Wedding Anniversary, hubby. See no one replied back honey, it really is between me and me.
The funny thing though I went to work and told them we were going away for our Wedding Anniversary and we started analyzing husbands of how they are today versus years in the past and what do we really look forward to. When you are first married you beg, plead, argue and disagree with your husband of what his true calling is in this relationship. Picking up a few dishes would be nice, vacuuming, what a concept, do we have it for laundry duty for the husband, we do until he shrinks all of your work clothes and you realize your dry cleaning bill is better for your sanity.
If only our daughters and younger sisters realize that this is a growing process. You can't revamp any husband over night, so after many days, weeks and months of arguing, they start changing. You hope they change for the better of the relationship, not the worse. Now after many years of being together you think it would get better, yes it does get better, but worse in many other ways. Now my husband would say it, "I only think of you." Now I have told him many times, he is definitely not thinking of me, in fact I can say he is actually lying. For whose benefit you ask, for his. Now he is helping out with the dishes, when he wants to, he does vacuum when he would rather take that task then hear me yell, and he does do laundry because I refuse to do it. Grudgingly. Now seriously, am I going to split hairs here. Take the help I get (grudgingly), or don't. Hmmmmmmmm that one is a tough decision.
Would he say something else if he was writing this, dah of course, grudging comes hand and hand with yelling. I yell, he grudges, I yell, he grudges, on and on and on. That is what they call a marriage.
I will say one thing for my wonderful (but grudging husband), since I got sick, my husband has been so much more helpful and loving. He has tried to help even in a grudging voice, which when you really think about it isn't his fault, he is a husband. So what I say to all of those newbie wives, just accept the grudging, its better than nothing at all.
Happy Wedding Anniversary, to my husband!!!!

Happy Regrets of a Good Friend
I have a friend that died the other day at the age of 90. The older I get the younger 90 seems. I was lucky to see her after many years on her birthday. When I went to her birthday party I was so astonished that not very many people showed up for it. So many people in my own workplace had commented of how she made them laugh and how nice she was. I thought surely with all these comments that more people would have showed up.
I realized in going to her funeral that I really didn't know this person at all. In all the times we sat down to have lunch and talk she never really was proud enough to tout her own achievements to me. In listening to the speakers' talks I realized also that she was a great listerner and a great problem solver for others. I soon realized that she didn't take pride in her accomplishments but she was actually helping me to solve my day to day problems in life during those lunchs.
I felt bad that I hadn't taken the time to know her, to know that she was a great play director, that she knew most of the governors of our fine state by first name, that she traveled the world, that she painted not just a few paintings but a lot of paintings.
I realized that when you become retired and out of the mainstream of life that people either die off around you, or you are so soon forgotten. She touched so many people's lives in so many ways and even though she had been pretty much housebound for many years, those people that were still alive didn't feel it sufficient to attend her funeral. It was very sad.
The funeral was beautiful, the music was the best I had ever heard in a funeral. The talks were well played out. I couldn't feel sad for losing her though. For some reason I knew her, like the talks stated, with a mischievous twinkle in her eye and a joke at every turn. I felt, like her son said, don't be sad or cry for her because she would have rather passed with a joke and have you laughing. I don't think I have ever gone to a funeral and smiling through the entire thing. It was a good day for her and me.
Was I good friend to her, probably not, but I allowed her to be my friend and part of my memories and that was good for me. Thank you dear friend.

ENTITLEMENT
I have to laugh when I think of that word, is it a good word or a bad word. I am not quite sure, but I will tell you when you live in a semi-wealthy tourist city, you realize that people who have been raised with the silver spoon in their mouth or anyone near them think they are entitled.
The other day I was driving up through the canyon to go home, it is snowy, dark and cold and I come across this car that had no back lights on. So I do my thing, honk, flash the brights, turn on my turn signal and this goes on for several miles. Finally after trying to juggle the snow myself and winding down the window several times, I get their attention and pull the car over. I realize they are from out of town in a rental car with the license plate of Montana, if you don't know how to run your car in the snow, I doubt they are from Montana. Now am I really thinking of anyone else other than their safety at this point, no.
When I finally get to talk to them, I say "your back lights are not on," and the lady passenger said, "oh we know, we have been trying to find out how to turn them on." Now seriously, if you know you have a problem on problem roads wouldn't you be thinking not of your own inconvenience but those people on the road that you are endangering, get off and figure it out.
Soon thereafter my son that lives in this same town with us puts on his facebook, that he almost killed someone that was out jogging in the dark snowy morning not on the sidewalk, not off the side of the road, but in the middle of the road without any colored warning clothing.
Now people, even if you have all the money in the world and could probably fix whatever problem that you can create, and you feel entitled to do so, think of other people other than yourself.
The freeway is like a whole new truth in how people really are. If you can't drive down a huge freeway from a mountain resort town, you shouldn't be here. I am driving to work, again in the dark, cold and snowy morning, at 75 mph (yes I was speeding) and come across a car just past a main entrance to the freeway. I realize his dome light is on, I don't think anything of it so I really don't take the time to think is this guy doing anything wrong. When I come up to his driver door, I realize the dome light is for his convenience so he can read a book, no not a map, no not texting like we complain all these texters are doing, he is reading a full on book. At that point I said I should have taken the time to do something about this, who knows who will endanger going at that speed.
We have been living in this town for 10 years, love it, love the atmosphere, but just like that word Entitlement, Atmosphere can also have a demeaning connotation. You can sit on your deck and enjoy the view and atmosphere or you can go to town and deal with atmosphere of those that think they are entitled. Even if you can afford the wreck you might create more emotional and phsycial damage than anyone can ever afford.
P.S. If I am going to juggle snow with idiots, I am going to start taking pictures of the license plate and posting them and their idiot ways. Be looking for future pictures.

GROWING UP
They just announced that Hostess is liquidating. My first temptation was to go to the nearest store and buy up everything that I possibly could get in my freezer and hoard!!!! No more Ding Dongs, no more Twinkies, no more cupcakes, no more donuts for breakfast.
Now if you have had anything to do with my blog you will realize that I have Celiac disease. Someone with this disease should know better. But if you will recall in one of my first blogs, I listed everything off that I would miss and one of them was having a diet coke and hostess donut in the morning. Yes I did cut back when the doctor said no more, but for some reason I felt the need about every week at least once to have some of those coconut cinnamon donuts on my way to work along with my diet Coke/Pepsi straight out of the machine. It usually didn't make me happy in the end, but it was great going down.
I sometimes hate corporate America, it takes the childhood out of all of us. I remember when Tab went off the market, everyone was buying them as fast they could and it was sad day when your last can was drank.
I saw a news real on Bevin Bros. who are the bell making company out of Belltown, Connecticut that supplies all of us with small to large bells each year for Christmas. They are the ones that have been supplying bells to the Salvation Army for years. They have been in business for 130 years. They were hit by lightening this last year and the whole factory went up in flames. Now Matt Bevin said on this that he would never seize to give up making bells and still has some of the employees working for him in makeshift factory to supply those bells this year. You hear these stories of how a President of a company losing money would rather cut back certain benefits or money to keep his employees employed.
I am sure there is a lot more to this story than just keeping people employed, the greed of many will take down everything. I defended against the Canadians of how many chemicals and preservatives were in them. I didn't care as long as it preserved not just my body, but my childhood.
I think of my obsession of peeling food came from Hostess. I would slowly take the frosting of the cupcake off. Slowly eat the cake to finally getting to the cream and then eat the frosting up to the white curlycues and then finish it off in eating them last. The Ding Dongs weren't just ate quickly, it was slowly peeled hopefully in large chucks of chocolate and then I would eat the cake and then finish it off eating the chocolate. The pies were only purchased for a treat when I went on field trips, no more field trips. The Twinkies what can you say about a Twinkie other than every child ate them and I even made a wedding cake out of them for my daughter's husband. And of course the best for last, everyone was raised on the Hostess white bread. It was soft and the taste lingered while it stuck to your teeth.
I am sad and I don't want Hostess' grownups to make stupid decisions to offend your memories.

The People Behind Me
For years now I have wondered about my genealogy. I am not into investigating my history with names and dates, but more along the lines of actual stories. I talked with my family members in somewhat detail in trying to get something out of them. For some reason ITS A BIG SECRET. I know this sounds stupid but it is almost like pulling teeth when you ask about it. They make you feel that they did the work, so now you need to. NOT.
So after a few discussions I decided to get on Ancestry.com. I was curious and no one was going to ease that curiosity other than me. As soon as I started entering in names, other names and information started popping up. I couldn't go fast enough. I didn't have enough time in the day. I realized that someone had to put this information in beyond me, cause all I was doing was linking people to information that was already put in. I had not done any research.
A friend of mine was doing her genealogy at the same time I was and so we would compare notes periodically. She would look at me with forelorn (do you like that word, it reminds of days gone past). She had not found even close to the links I had. I really have to contribute my genealogy to those individuals somewhere in the tree that had done their research and had put a lot of information in some database. Beyond those individuals I am sure there are institutions, historians, and religions that have inputted information of what they have in their deep dark chasms.
Yes I will be the one that lets out the information to anyone that wants to know, I am a g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-daughter of Henry VIII. I know it is hard to believe. I am also a decedent of all the kings and queens from every country possible in Europe from Denmark, Sweden to Turkey. I am also a decedent of the pilot and doctor of the Mayflower. I even found my way all the way to Adam and Eve (twice), now I don't know where you came from, at least I know I came from Adam and Eve. It's these kinds of stories that intrigue me.
It was hard to comprehend this entire thing when so many names came up. I will never know all of their stories. I will never understand how I was the great something grand daughter of a king, and now I am a pauper. I don't even get that concept.
I have to laugh sometimes when I will see a private ancestry line and you have to email them to ask for information. The one time I did that they sent me information I did not know about my own grandmother. You feel so personally offended when someone has information about your own grandmother that you don't have, but then you realize that if my grandmother had 12 children (10 lived) with how many of them had 4-10 children and how many of them had 4-10, there is a lot of people that you are related to right now living that you don't even know. When you think of it in that way, this world seems so small and so large at the same time.
Now since I know my ancestry is linked with so many known individuals, I look at history in a whole different way.
I am so grateful to so many that really did this research, and that enjoyed sharing. That is what Ancestry.Com is all about or any other genealogy site, is sharing.

Naive Perspective
This last year has taken a toll not only on my body, but also on my mind. In sitting around in pain, I think what is important to me, what can I live without, what can I leave behind. I sort of started with the basics because that was the thing that was most evident. Is it really necessary to clean that room this weekend? Is it really necessary to take that trip? Do I really want to do that activity when I can make more memories doing this? I got a quick jolt of this during this last weekend's events.
This year has been one of the worst dry years we have had. Anything could ignite a fire because everywhere there is dry grass and dry weeds. This state has had many fires from small ones to extreme large ones.
In the middle of a visit from my daughters and their kids this Saturday, we were just having lunch and we looked up and noticed there was smoke across the lake in the brush. So we sat there for a minute and watched the smoke turn into a full on forest fire.
After talking with my husband he said "oh that fire won't get out of control, they will have it put it out before it reaches us." Well when the flames started getting higher and higher I soon realized that it was better to be prepared than sorry. I had to quickly analyze what was important to me to pack up and get out. So I jumped up and started hauling things out to the car. With the great help of daughters and an hour later most of the car was packed with only my memories. All my photos and journals, were put safe in a car that I could drive off. I thought how do these people do it when they only have 5 min.
Somewhere in the act of the three of us flying all over the house, my grandboys said grandma we need to get the baby pictures out of the house. Well the baby photos can be reproduced by their moms, but I saw in their eyes this great concern that their memories would be wiped out by the fire as well.
The last thing to get in my car was a Russian stacking doll that I had received from a friend a couple years back. My grandson came up to me and said "you can't forget this," it is his favorite toy. I soon realized that it wasn't just my memories that I was concerned about it was the good memories that my grandkids would lose if the fire came close.
My daughter the next day was relaying memories that she had at her grandparents house, of the good things that each grandmother made for food or the things she remembers of her grandfathers. She asked "mom what do you think my kids will remember after you have passed." She started relaying the waffles and berry syrup that I make every time my grandkids show up at the house or the Jacuzzi that my husband lets the kids get into on every visit.
In thinking of the day before, I thought the reason why three women were running through the house was to save the memories I would cry over if I lost them in a fire. The memories weren't just for me, but the memories I could pass onto my kids and to their kids. That the Russian doll would be replaced by a photo or a journal of their grandmother that made them waffles and berry syrup. Grandkids always put it in perspective.

Morning Peace
When people say "stop to smell the roses" I have to laugh because sometimes I think my life is so slow how can I not stop to smell the roses, the point is, I don't.
Almost every morning I get up, usually struggling in pain, but I at least get up and get in the car to go to work. On my way to work I drive through canyons that I have dearly loved all my life. When I start on my journey what greets me are hot air balloons. Sometimes the concept of smelling the roses is just the actual act of analysing the concept of why things are with yourself. I looked at those balloons and wondered why do they always make me happy.
Today I found the answer. There isn't a child that I have known that wasn't more excited about a balloon than the toys they may play with. Balloons are a concept of why does that balloon lift off and if I let go where will it land. The variety of colors can trigger the happy senses of anyone. Balloons were created for a variety of reasons to celebrating a birthday to actually inventing the blimp for football games.
I have flown in a small plane, a jet, I have jumped out of planes and even though you sort of get the concept of how this huge thing stays in the air, the mere volume of noise competes with your thought waves of what am I really doing up here. Hot air balloons allows you the peace, the silence and the time to allow those thoughts of why am I happy in this unbelievable understanding object to take me above the ground, above my real life, and above my problems.
My husband is afraid of planes, he will go in them, but he definitely does not like them. As childlike as my husband is, every morning when he sees the hot air balloons he screams through the house repetitively of the amount of balloons in the air. It brings us back to days of youth and folly.
The days when it is dark and gloomy doesn't allow those balloons to launch and I realize those are the days that I am my sadest. Wouldn't it be nice if life was easy as going up in a hot air balloon.

LONG AWAITED CELEBRATION
Yes, I have been sick for about seven months now. I learned in July 2011 that something that was wrong, but the doctors couldn't put their finger on it.
In November I had a small stroke in my right eye and after seeing the doctor and believe me he wasn't intentionally trying to do this, but I panicked with his demands of trying to get more testing. The eye doctor said I had a symptom that indicated "transient blindness." He said, what happens is the plaque goes up through the retinal artery that creates blindness. Sometimes it is temporary and if it lasts long enough it can cause permanent blindness. He immediately asked for an echo cardiogram. The echo shown that I had a hole in my heart which needed further investigation.
Off to the cardiologist. By this point I had gone off any rheumatoid medicine for fear that it was causing some of the problems. Going off the medicine created major pain everywhere. I had pain from the tip of my toes to the top of my head. Unbelievable headaches, and chest pains. He did a 24 hour heart monitor, and a stress test done. The cardiologist reassured me that I wasn't going to have a heart attack and probably wouldn't have a massive stroke, but we just needed to do all the testing before we would know more. Both of them eventually came out with no problems.
I then had to go for an MRI. I remembered the first MRI I had done and it was on my neck and it was really sick to look at your own films. It wouldn't have been a problem if I was looking at someone's elses, but for someone that is not use to looking at people's insides, it is seriously sick. So in going to do this, it was scary. I was afraid of what I would find, but on the other hand I was more anxious to get answers.
I just happen to go to the sleep doctor that day and I thought I had another mini stroke because when I woke I didn't seem to have any problems, 15 minutes I am in massive headache. All he had to do was look at me, and he immediately sent me to the Emergency Room. When you go for an MRI you must outweigh, am I claustrophobic or am I not, because once you are in that machine, it truly feels like you are in a coffin. Beyond the feeling then you have the noise, it's ear piercing. They told me either find a driver for us to knock you out, or be brave and get in the D___ machine. No they didn't say that, I said that to myself, and myself finally said, get in the machine it is not going to kill you.
Then off to the neurologist to read the films. The ER told me there was nothing wrong and my MRI came out clear. When I got into the neurologist I had another melt down when she corrected the ER and said no there is definitely something on your films. When and how did it happen she had no idea. As soon as I checked in with her I knew I was in trouble. It took 6 hours of consulting and testing. Another test took another day off from work. And then the final consult. She said that the hole in the heart was medium size but didn't seem to be a problem and that she was going to put me on medicine for the rest of my life.
After being first scared to death with a mini-stroke in the eye, how many doctor appointments, testing, hospitals, and for her to tell me that it was not going to be a problem, was probably one of the happiest days of my life.
Now the pain must be treated somehow, but at least I wasn't having heart surgery, or even close to that. HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORAY

In Time of Need
Over the many months I have several friends and family that have asked how am I doing. The concern is really quite there, but I have learned a really important rule of thumb, if they say that statement and the next thing out of their mouth is all about them, I know they are just asking automatically not out of real concern.
I was telling a friend the other day (believe me this person is a really sweet lady) about a young couple that my daughter knows really well that has just found out that their two daughters have bubble boy syndrome. Now mind you maybe my friend didn't know much about bubble boy syndrome, I sure didn't know. Bubble boy syndrome is where the entire family must stay locked in their home for fear that their children will contract something through their individual contact outside of the home. The family has five children and their father has had to give up his jobs (he was working two jobs) in order to keep the children healthy.
Again back to my friend, I am not kidding the minute I initally told her about this friend and I stopped talking she starting telling me about her health issues and her problems and what is in her future. I am not sure if that was a knee jerk reaction to not have to talk about this person's blight or on a selfish "I like to hear myself talk".
When you are going through a health issue, it is a very personal issue, but it effects so many (your family, friends, your job, etc.) I have learned sometimes that nothing is as easy as a cold or the flu, it is much worse and you just don't know how lucky you were at one time to just have the everyday cold.
You also realize that while you are healthy sometimes you will hear about someone else's blight like this young family with their children, sometimes you ignore and sometimes you pay it forward. But it never hits closer to home until you are sick and you realize their blight is a lot worse than yours. Your sickness doesn't go away because you justify yours against someone else's problems, it just puts it into perspective.
There are a lot of sick people, families, co-employees that are out there. Some of them won't come out okay. Some will have death, and some will have miracles. It is up to us, sick or well to do something to help ease, may it just be a kind word or a token that you can afford. That's called "Humanity." Some countries or groups would rather allow those to die to ease their burden of having to even think about caring. If one thing is taken from this world it is not the word but the action of "Humanity."
It is soon Christmas and I think more and more of these sad family stories come out for them to not be left behind, especially at this time of the year. Let's don't forget the act of Humanity during the rest of the year. Christ wouldn't.

Waiting for the Shoe to Fall
I haven't blogged in awhile. My daughter said that you don't really know how well you are until you are sick and believe me she is so accurate. Just after a simple little camping trip with the girlfriends, I got horribly ill. It started feeling like rheumatoid arthritis. My legs started stiffening up to where I couldn't get out of the car. Within a matter of weeks, the entire body started stiffening up. I eventually became so weak I couldn't pick up a pillow, that is pretty sad.
My husband and I were going to go to Paris and I was panicking and maybe I should have panicked a little more than rely on just one doctor which I do like, but he didn't have the right answers. After the trip, I knew I had to do something, I literally was dragging through Paris. My general practitioner sent me to a rheumatologist and after seeing the new doc, he gave me prednisone. Within a day I felt absolutely great, I can't even tell you how good I felt.
I know I am out of condition, but even that change made me feel like a new person. As soon I called my friend she gave me the bad news that prednisone is only a steroid that takes the swelling down, but the real problem is still there it is just masking it. I was sad. Maybe by luck the whole body will just readjust and I won't have anymore problems.
I have two years of just being sick. To some degree it is not anything tragic, but in another degree it has been a constant battle with one thing or another. What else could happen. I know that the onset of middle-old age can cause problems, I expect that, but on a continuous basis. Stayed Tune for Upcoming Events.

Gold In Those Potatoes
When my Grandson, Wyatt, age 7, came back from Lava Hot Springs and he picked up a rock there thinking it was a meteor rock. He was going to sell it for $10,000. He was going to pay his little brother, Dean, age 4, $10.00 if he screamed into the street, "Meteor rock for $10,000" and he sold it. So after his mother and I laughed about it, I told her that if he didn't sell it by the time I saw him again, which could be several weeks, I would offer him $20 for it. Shortly thereafter he called me and said in his very jumbled up kid talk, I'll sell it to you for $30, I thought didn't that go up, then in the same conversation he said "I'll sell it to you for $40." This seemed strange the price was going up not down.
The next day I just happen to have to go down to their house, and when I got there, there were two signs, one on the mailbox and one on a landscape rock stating, "$10,000,000 (he thought it was $10,000) for meteor rock." So immediately he pounced on me, did you see my rock, I told him no, he said it was right in front of the sign. So Gary and I went out and there was a small little rock in front of the sign about 3" in diameter. We had to laugh. So after lunch I told his mom that I was going to teach Wyatt how to bard er so she needed to help him.
He said "Grandma I will sell you that special meteor rock for $60." I laughed, and said "Wyatt the price isn't suppose to go up, but go down. So we went back and forth and finally Grandma paid $35 with the agreement $7 went to his little brother.
Last night I got stuck in traffic for two hours which would have normally taken 45 minutes. You could say I wasn't happy. So for entertainment purposes I called my daughter and she was right in the middle of screaming at the kids and making dinner, so I told her I would talk to her later. A few minutes later, my oldest grandson which is soon to be 7, called me and he said Grandma are you going to have to pee in the car and get no food tonight. Which I figured out his mom told him I was stuck in the car in traffic. I about peed my pants just thinking about what he said.
We had a nice entertaining talk when I told him I needed to go and would talk to him later, I got another phone call from my youngest grandson of that family, Dean, age 4, obviously jilted from not talking to his grandma and he asked where we were going on our trip this week. I said "to Ide-ho, Ide-ho, Ide-ho (aka Idaho). I said "do you want to go," he said "nope I've already been there." I said "really when," he said, "I went to Lava Hot Springs, Idaho." I thought I guess that means he will never have to go back to that state again. I asked him what is Idaho famous for. He didn't know. I told him he eats them everyday. So finally I told him it was the Ide-ho potato. He said really. I said do you know there are gold in those potatoes, he said really. I told him that per ca pita (now really do they know what per ca pita is, not) Idaho has the richest people in the United States because of the Ide-ho potato. I told him there is gold in those brown things.
So now they think meteors only hit the State of Idaho and there is gold in their potatoes.
Grandkids - they say the darndest things
My oldest grandchild had asked me in the past, "Grandma, how come you can't eat bread and rolls." Of couse I have tried to explain it like Grandmas do. But he had some friends over and he told his friends within earshot of his mom, "My Grandma can't eat wheat because she was stung by a bee." Those poor friends of his will be dodging bees just so they can have their PB&J sandwiches.
Blue, I think I will paint the ceiling Blue
I have to laugh every time I think of this conversation I had with my friend. It was several years ago, we were all sitting around having dinner before the girls went to the movies and she throws this out, I am sure not realizing the impact it would have on me. Now mind you at this point in her life she hasn't had a relationship for awhile. She said "you know if I had only known the last time I had sex it was going to be the last, I would have tried to enjoy it more." Not only was that statement funny then, it has been hysterically funny since.
When you get older and a little bit less physical from either lack of exercise or ailments, you really realize that life is not going to turn around and make you be younger. But it also makes you realize that you truly need to appreciate every moment, not just the good times, but the bad times as well.
A co-worker has just got a diagnosis of 4 stage cancer. She has all the hope in the world, she is only 45, and I am sure she knows this diagnosis isn't hopeful in itself, but if she isn't hopeful she may not turn anything around on her own. Why do wait for us to get so sick that we start making the effort of enjoying life.
Every time I got out in the yard, even though I despise weeds, I have to appreciate them because if I didn't appreciate the gardening the time spent out in the yard grooming it, maybe I wouldn't appreciate the flowers as much. Yes would I rather appreciate a Gardner more, probably, but right now I must appreciate me, of what I can do.
Everything even the smallest of things seems to be work. The enjoying parts of my life sometimes seem even more work. I am about to have a camping weekend with my friends. We don't have the luxury of having someone come in and do the whole weekend for us and we just have to make the appearance, no, it will still be some work on all of us. But you know I hope I really take the time to appreciate every minute with my friends. Those are what create memories.
Life is grabbing those small moments and just really enjoying it.

F____ Doctors
Oh I lost my peps on that title didn't I. Well let me tell you, after this week and several months of dealing with idiot doctors I have come to the conclusion that there are very few of them that really care, they are so tired of dealing with the insurance that they rush patients through to get enough money to pay for the malpractice insurance and they might yet have a major malpractice case from me.
At the beginning of the year I finally came to the conclusion that I needed to call an orthopedic specialist to deal with the pain in my neck. Well after making several phone calls I soon realized that they all don't deal with the neck and there really isn't anything they can do than send you to physical therapy which actually only gives you temporary relief and then it runs your money out and you are still at square one. Plus getting an appointment was like three months out, WHAT ABOUT THE PAIN, it would have been easier to check into the ER. One doctor's office was like a patient mill, another doctor's office barely gave me enough information to move to physical therapy, the pain doctor told me at the appointment that he could help, but as I was laying on a guerney going into surgery, he said this might not work, and one doctor finally gave me some answers and the time he spent probably dipped into his other patient's time.
I soon felt thereafter that I needed to deal with my stomach issues and try to get some answers there. I had told my friend of the experience I had with my past doctor. I loved the doctor, but after the colonoscopy and the endoscopy, he moved me to his PA (Physician Assistant) which I learned down the road that she gave me several wrong answers. But that wasn't good enough the PA sent me to her A (Assistant) which had no answers and it took me days to get a hold of her. So my friend sent me to her supposed personable doctor.
Oh it is so good that I took a couple of days to actually write this, because two days ago I was spitting. Every other word would have been a foul word, at least now it is usually just one in a paragraph.
I wanted to be prepared with a whole sheet of questions, I didn't really care if I had long lengthy answers, I just needed an answer. Well my first mistake was I had been out in my yard for three days gardening and by the time I saw him I was exhausted. I just needed one of these doctors to listen to my questions and answer me and I guess I got a little emotional. So when I started asking my questions, I started to cry. I wasn't upset that I had celiac disease, but that I was tired of dealing with doctors and just frustrated. He obviously took it that I was upset about the disease and dealing with my issues. Now being away from his office, I want to scream, I am not in the state of denial, and your an idiot not to investigate why I was crying than assuming, you are an a__.
You know as a grandmother I have learned, if you swear in front of your grandchildren you totally discredit yourself, well I figured with the maybe two people that read this entry, they can just ignore this entry. The grandchildren probably won't even care to read it until they are over the age of 21.
So while I was asking this idiot questions, he kept saying I think you need a support group, I think you need to see a dietitian, he kept repeating himself, I told him that I had a support group at work with a few people that have celiac disease. He didn't buy it. He was talking a mile a minute and if he wasn't saying I need a support group and dietitian, he was ripping off like he knew his medical Black's dictionary better than most and wanted to prove it to me. Now really do think I just understood your 15 minute lecture of the day, dumbass. Now looking back I just realized that everytime I said celiac disease I think he got upset because he was either trying to correct me with the correct term, "celiac sprue," or he was too impressed with himself. Too bad on both parts.
So as he was walking off out of the office like I had the plague or of course he had to get to the next patient for that big money, I said to him, do you want to take some blood tests. He said "not really I will after you're done with the dietitian, now truly do you think the dietitian is going to know what my count is on my celiac (oh sorry celiac sprue) or how much wheat I have been eating, another assumption on his part.
I had to laugh one of the questions I had was "I want to go to Paris and how much damage will I do if I am tempted with croissants in Paris and just want one and I eat it." His answer was if you can tolerate it and it doesn't make you sick, go ahead eat gluten, enjoy yourself," Now does that really answer the bloody question. I am not intolerant, I have a disease, will it cause problems down the road, obviously by his answer, go ahead and eat whatever you want, whenever you want as long as it doesn't hurt. So I hit the bakery on the way home, not because I can or should, just because he is an idiot. Of course it will hurt me in the end more than him, but right now I didn't give a shit, I was pissed.
Another question was "my stomach seemed to have gotten blotted overnight and I am retaining water. " The doctor replied, "I am sure you are eating too much wheat." Now truly does wheat retain water, and make you sick when I didn't even know I had the disease until I got sick with gastritis and this seems like the same pain with my stomach with the gastritis and the fatty liver." No answer, what a surprise on that one.
The best question was, "we'll I ever get over the gastritis or can this turn into cancer." The idiot doctor said, "I have never heard of anyone getting cancer from gastritis." And I am thinking that is not what the Mayo Clinic wrote on the Internet. Hmmmm, what a dumbass.
I think I only got through a couple of questions, and I could tell he was tired of me and wanted that next 15 minutes on his paycheck, and I was tired of his arrogant, superficial, and pretty much stupid attitude. He wasn't giving me any answers, and he wasn't patient enough to listen to the rest of the questions.
I have to laugh every time I meet someone like him and I want to say, you are waiting for a lawsuit. My father was slowly over many years had his intestine removed and eventually on a bag. Could it have been celiac disease ("sprue" sorry), probably.
Why cannot I just have a fulfilling 15 minutes without an arrogant asshole to deal with. This is why the insurance system is basically stupid. I have paid (essentially through my insurance) four doctor opinions that either too busy, too important, too something else and got nothing out of them, but they received close to $600 for each visit. Now who is the stupid ass, me for going, or them for being them, right now I am re-evaluating.

Judgment Day
Oh yeah, you knew, sometime or another it had to happen, that I would approach this subject and you would have to deal with it.
I just did a yoga test with my daughter. It was to show what type of personality you are and what you are trying to achieve. Well it showed that both Randi and I had a long way to go to perfection. It showed that your achievement in life was to want less, to ask for less, to desire less, that way you have more room to give, nor more stuff, but more of yourself to give. I definitely feel like I have not accomplished that.
The test also showed that we weren't totally high strung, but strung enough to periodically fuel a fire in an argument or to get upset where the cause doesn't warrant it. The training of yoga is to allow not only your body to learn how to build in different aspects, but also your mind and your character.
It made me think after we took this test and after we had a discussion about the real world, about religion and how religion is always putting Judgment Day around the corner. We agreed that those that live for the golden rules, usually live for the golden rules within their own kind not with those around them that aren't. In particular, the religion that I was raised in, if you talked to anyone within that religion they would say "we're not judgmental, we encourage relationships amongst those that aren't within our religion." From being from both sides of the fence, that its total malarkey.
I find myself constantly justifying to those that are part of my past religion that I am still a good person, a good mother, and a good wife and friend. Just because I don't go to church doesn't mean I am not spiritual, that I am not good, and that I am not worthy having people treat me with the golden rule like they are ordered by their own God.
Over the years I felt a constant pressure of proving myself, now I laugh and think you are the ones being judgmental, thinking you are above all that are not part of your religion. You have been taught life is only right within your own environment and not mine. I heard a saying a long time ago when I actually was going to church, this guy in high authority in the church said, "I was asked once, who do you think will be in heave with you, and I replied, won't you be surprised who will be in heaven, won't you be surprised if I am in heave and won't you be surprised if you are in heaven."
It is a working effort on all people to not just believe in the golden rules, but to actually act upon them to all people, all humans are children of God, not just the ones that walk through the door at church every Sunday. I feel sorry to those that truly believe they are living righteously and they are so wrong. I don't need someone telling me my judgment day is around the corner, and I am less than they are. I know I need to improve, but I can't be any worse than those judging me from every angle. Allow God and myself do the judgment of myself not YOU.

Planning for the Future
Okay I just got over the intestinal flu for five straight days, and believe me, I swear I was going to die. At one point, I thought it would be easier to die than feel this bad. While I was laying in bed and was so weak that I couldn't do anything, I looked around at my predicament and thought I need to make note of this, so when I am old and feeble, when my mind has gone south and my children or husband aren't listening to me, I can give them a list of things I immediately want in my presence until the day I am not ill anymore.
Now why or why when you ask your husband for a drink with a straw, that every drink after the first is missing the very important element, the straw. I can't tell you how many times I was too weak to leave a wet bed. So the first thing on my list is a stack of straws right next to the bed.
This must have been one of those flues that just didn't let go of the bathroom visits in more ways than one. Every bathroom in a 5 mile radius needs to have baby wipes and hopefully the ones that don't have alcohol in them. This really must be a Man's World since what mother would make baby wipes with alcohol in them. Reminder: I need to write that manufacturer.
Place strategically, several pairs of underwear and night gowns in each bathroom, with a diaper genie, a bottle of spray and wash for those moments of ugly. Need I say more.
Not realizing what all these trips to the bathroom would do to my body, I just laid there and slowly my body just shriveled up and got more and more dehydrated. Definitely a large supply of lotion, again another product without alcohol in it.
I soon realized that you should grow your hair out right before getting sick, there is nothing uglier than short hair and a 24 hour stay in bed. That hair has no respect for your beauty.
A 24 hour maid service, if your house doesn't need cleaning I am sure an every hour refresher of sheets and linens would be extremely grateful.
A masseuse. I didn't realize how when you get older, dehydration takes such a toll on your muscles. I kept getting charlie-horses in my legs and feet. Plus every muscle in my body just ached for days. Oh yeah, definitely a masseuse.
One last thing, take out every mirror within a five block radius. It is just down right hideous to see yourself in that state. Once you are better and the mirrors are returned, be happily surprised after you have lost 20 lbs, from lack of eating, and actually have your hair and makeup done once again.
You can jump past the above items if you just remember one thing, don't wait until the 5th day to finally start drinking. Learn the lesson: alcohol will wash and sterilize the intestine immediately on the first day, and you will feel so much better one way or the other.
Reminder to Me: Keep this list close with your donor list, you may need it just before the donor list. Just a reminder those organs may not be harvestable if too much consumption of alcohol has been taken prior to donating.
I love being healthy!!!!!!
